Estates Management

Camden Council provides housing to over 30,000 households across a diverse mix of housing estates, blocks, high-rise and street properties. Looking after these properties on a day-to-day basis requires a dedicated team of people, who take pride in their work and who can work with our residents and the communities we serve.

Among other front-line services, Estates Management primarily delivers caretaking to Camden’s 400+ estates, playing a vital role in contributing to the success Camden 2025, specifically ‘safe, strong and open communities’. Resident safety is embedded in everything we do as a service.

Camden Caretakers are valued by our residents and perceived as the face of the Council - the first point of contact for advice and support by members of the community. As such, our Caretakers play a vital role by signposting and representing the Council, as well as the core functions of cleaning and upkeep of our estates.

A recent review of the service has highlighted that residents want to receive value for money and want to be sure that the Council can be held accountable with improved monitoring, checks and inspections and a closer relationship between the service and its residents. As such we are investing heavily in this service and a number of new roles have been created:

  • Caretakers
Resident facing and responsible for diverse workloads that include cleaning and upkeep of communal areas of our estates and housing blocks with a strong focus on resident safety.
  • Safer Housing Caretakers
Resident facing with specialist responsibilities that include both programmed and reactive work across the borough
  • Safer Housing Caretaking Lead
Responsible for assisting with implementing the Council’s commitment to resident safety on our estates, and managing the Safer Housing Caretakers and Window Cleaning service
  • Caretaker Managers
Primarily responsible for managing a ‘patch’ of up to 10 caretakers and their workloads. Our new Caretaker Managers are empowered to resolve customer issues face-to-face and work with residents to meet borough-wide standards on a local level.
  • Quality Assurance Inspectors
Our new QAI’s work with residents and our front-line teams to understand how local demands affect the delivery of borough-wide standards, and embed co-designed processes that allow for greater resident involvement in monitoring and feedback.

  • Window Cleaners
Our window cleaning team works on a programmed basis, using specialist equipment to ensure the external glass of our buildings are maintained properly.

  • Meter Readers
Tackling fuel poverty is important to the Council and acknowledges how essential it is for residents to have accurate date on their energy consumption. This team responds to resident requests for electricity and gas meter reads and assist utility providers on site where applicable, to gain access to meter cupboards.

  • Other management roles
Embedding our new Estate Management service will require specialist skills and strong project acumen. These new roles focus on supporting the service to deliver the ambitions of the review while ensuring our Caretakers are empowered to do what they do best.

  • Administration
Responsible for a number of functions within the service that correctly record the evidence of our work on resident safety, and provide support to the on-going programme of works required to keep our estates running smoothly.

There are a number of new demands being placed on the service to support the Council’s commitment to resident safety; particularly in relation to fire safety.

Estates Management has been redesigned to provide more staff on the ground, trained to a high standard. This new service will ensure an increased Camden presence on our estates, delivering a local service for and on behalf of our residents.

We are especially keen to receive applications from Camden residents, with a good local knowledge. Full training is provided for all customer-facing roles.
